| Gambling Myths: Suicide
Gambling myths do have a darker side to them. There are several interesting rumors concerning certain actions of players and suicide. According to these myths, many of the players who attempted or committed suicide had a bad run at gambling for the evening and killed themselves out of despair. While these can make for interesting speculations, fortunately these myths are not always true.
The Suicide Rumors
The most interesting suicide rumor revolves not around one particular person but around a so-called “suicide table” that apparently brought very bad luck to whoever was unlucky enough to purchase the table and use it for gambling. According to the popular stories surrounding the table, its first owner ran up a $70,000 debt then killed himself the first night of owning the 1860s table.
The next unfortunate owner also had the table for one night before running up a debt and killing himself – or having someone else do it. After these two incidents the table was supposedly put in storage, but the table had a third owner. Apparently, the third owner fared no better, however. He lost $86,000, his mine, and his horses in one night and killed himself thereafter. The unlucky table is now on display – not in use — at the Delta Saloon in Virginia City, Nevada.
Casino Windsor
Another fascinating suicide myth more easily dispelled says that more than a dozen people have killed themselves after losing a bet in the Casino Windsor. These people apparently all killed themselves after losing their life savings, but this assertion cannot be proven true. The only report has been about an attempted suicide by a man driving his car down the casino’s boat ramp. Yet, the man was attempting to kill himself after a domestic dispute and had not been gambling.
But since death and rumors are darkly fascinating aspects of life, the suicide myths are not likely to disappear from the casino world at any time soon, if ever. They will continue to grow and change shape as the casino world has a life of its own.
People who are fascinated by these stories should take them for the myths they are until they can prove the stories with facts.
