| Gambling Myths: Religion and Gambling
A more complex myth in the world of betting concerns that of religion and its role in gambling. While some people tend to think that gambling is immoral and a sign of a lack of religion, it is true that in many cultures around the world, gambling has been linked for years to spirituality and religion.
Analyzing that link can be fascinating for people to do, especially since most people do not realize how inextricably involved gambling and religion are with each other.
Gambling and Spirituality
There is a heated debate surrounding the role of gambling on Native American reservations. While some people say gambling is the best way for the reservations to remain autonomous and independent of the United States government, other people argue that gambling is causing a negative social and economic impact on the reservations.
The surprising common ground of these two sides to the argument is that of spirituality. Gambling in its various shapes and forms has long been a part of the Native American culture as well as other cultures across the world.
Rites and Festivals
Gambling and game playing have been linked to ancient religious rites and festivals. This is because, ironically, gambling and praying have a few common links that most people do not realize. Gambling in its most ancient form and praying are both after the same concept. Both actions are designed to seek the divine will of the gods or god, as well as to provide affirmation or a reversal of bad fortune.
Roll the Bones
Researchers have also discovered that dice games have long been a part of several ancient cultures. In these times, dice consisted of bones that were used instead of the materials used today. The dice could be thrown to establish patterns which these cultures believed could help to determine or predict the outcome of anything from the weather to fertility, the celestial bodies, and a potential famine.
It is easy to imagine the ancient cultures participating in these rituals after watching a gambler wish for luck before tossing the dice in a craps game, for example. Such goes to show that gambling and religion are indeed linked despite the more modern belief by a few people that gambling is immoral.
